North Pacific
The Guanacaste area lies to north west of San Jose. Several highways wind their way up through fantastic landscapes. Take the Interamerican highway towards Liberia.
If sun is what you are after, sun is what you'll get in this region. One of the most popular areas for resorts and spas, Guanacaste is a golden spread of rolling hills and spreading branched trees. Temperatures can rise to the mid 90°F with little or no breeze during most of the year. The dry season here lasts from November on through April and cools down a bit during December and January.
When packing keep in mind the high temperatures and bright sun. Hats, sunglasses and long-sleeved cotton shirts are essential when visiting parks in the area. Shorts keep your legs breezy as you hit your stride on the trail.
Comfortable trail shoes for the parks and sandals for everywhere else should help keep you comfortable. Take plenty of bottled water when hitting the trails and try to get to them as early as possible in order to avoid the worst of the day’s heat.
Guanacaste offers a wide variety of options, ranging from birding to sportsfishing and sunbathing Take a peaceful rafting trip down the Río Corobicí. When it is lacking in whitewater, it makes up for in wildlife. Take along binoculars for great birdwatching as you wind your way downstream.
